This is Tarri Lucier, your Burning Man Director. My goal is to gather a group of Cal students to plan and create a big, fun work of art and take it to the desert for Burning Man 2008.
As a 6-time veteran of this event, I am qualified to fill this position and help it come off beautifully. Artists and creative types of all kinds are welcome to join, as well as those who would like to act in a supportive role.
I will begin accepting names immediately, and would like to have a first meeting by mid-October. In the meantime, go to burningman.com and read about the theme for next year. Artwork based on the theme may be able to get grant money from the Burning Man Corporation. Start doing sketches and writing down thoughts that you can share at the first meeting.
If this is something you've ever thought of doing, now is the time! The experience will be unlike anything else. And nothing can be better for us creative types. :0)
Check back here to find out when the first meeting will be.
Chow.
~ Tarri

Welcome !

to the Art Group at Berkeley's Blog. Email us if you have any art related events that support Berkeley student artists.

Art Member Exhibitions

Xuan Chen exhibits her paintings at the Frank Bette Gallery
"Reading Between the Lines"
September 7-29, 2007

Jessica Tatara and Ivory King exhibit "identity art" at the ASUC Gallery. We can't do our homework at home with a computer. Most of us must use the studios to work on our large oil and acrylic paintings. We paint at all hours of the night in the Kroeber art studios because during most evening hours, our studios are filled with Berkeley Extension classes.

Each semester, we call the police several times to have homeless or disturbed persons removed from our studios. They wander in because the building does not have a key code system in place for the two art and anthropology entrances. This semester we are worried about more dangerous situations occurring around our building.

Safety and Security is never more important than now with the numerous armed robberies happening daily around Kroeber and Wurster Halls. Each semester over the past 5 years, our Art Group has requested a key code system and key code numbers for all the art students at Kroeber. Each semester this request has been denied for unknown reasons. The architecture students have key codes and feel safe working at night in Wurster hall. Art students' safety should be important to the university as well.

This semester, is different. We must get the university to ensure we have a safe working environment at night for the following reasons:

Quoted from the Daily Californian, September 12th, 2007

"In the Strada robbery, a man with a duffle bag approached a table of five students studying together just before 10 p.m. and showed them a gun tucked in his waistband.

In a quiet voice, he asked them to hand over their laptops, police said. He then held up another table of three people in similar fashion and fled south on College Avenue.

Six people handed over their laptops, police said."

This was just one of 3 armed robberies that occurred around Kroeber that day. Each day over the past week, 1 or more armed or violent robberies have happened near the art department. We can't take any more chances. Attend our lunch meeting on Thursday to show your support.

This is not the full list of armed robberies, but it will give you a glimpse:
Click here to see recent armed robbery incidents

Please send this information to your parents and ask them to voice their concern to the administration for key code implementation at Kroeber Hall.

Email us with any incidents to add.
